Bringing my Puppy Home

This is such an exciting time, bringing home a new puppy to cuddle & love! Puppies are ready for their new homes once they reach 8 weeks old. Remember, they are leaving everything familiar behind so it may take a short time to adjust! You can ease their transition by being prepared.

Diet

Your new puppy is eating NutriSource small breed puppy food. They should be eating 3 meals/day approximately 1/4 c. dry food/setting. This is important as small breeds do not have large fat reserves, missing a meal may cause them to have dangerously low glucose levels (hypoglycemia). Monitor their consumption, do NOT put food in the bowl & assume they are eating. If you choose to switch to a different brand of puppy food this should be done gradually. Once your puppy reaches around 6 months of age they may be switched to 2 feedings/day & maintain this schedule through maturity. They may be switched to adult formula food between 9-12 months of age.

Sleep
&
Play

Sleep- Your new puppy may spend lots of time sleeping, potentially 16-18 hrs/day! They'll need a warm quiet place to rest & nap times throughout the day.  They should have access to their 'den' or crate in case they become tired or frightened.

Play- It is recommended that your puppy have 20 mins/day of playing, mental stimulation, and light exercise. It's best to break this up into several shorter sessions. Enjoy this opportunity to give your new puppy lots of love & affection!

Our Puppy Care & Growth

Week 0-2

Birth & Beginning. .

We await the arrival of each new litter with great anticipation.  It's exciting to witness the miraculous birth of each little puppy!  At Birth they weigh approx. 6-9 oz. That's a stick of butter!!  We begin monitoring them to make sure they stay warm, clean, safe & healthy. Within a few days they make their 1st vet visit & have their tails docked & dew claws removed. Their eyes open & they gain a sense of hearing around the end of this period, along with puppy stimulation & socialization being in full swing.

Week 3-5

Growing & Becoming Independent. . .

Puppies teeth erupt & natural weaning begins. They start eating puppy food. We spend 'special' time with the pups giving them each play time, cuddling, and attention. We give them 'real house' experiences so they become familiar with different sounds & smells.

Week 6-8

Getting Ready for New Home . . .

The puppies will be away from their mama & fully weaned during these weeks. They will spend a little time with their mini poodle papa & our full size Australian Shepherd to get them familiar with other dogs. They will have had a couple baths & maybe even had their nails clipped. The last week they'll have a 2nd veterinarian visit & receive their vaccinations.  Now they're ready to go home. . . .
